Rai Kunisue is a son of Master Craftsman at Kamakura period; Rai Kuniyuki (来国行), and a brother of Rai Kunitoshi (来国俊).

Although very few swords made by him have been preserved till the present day, some tachi are designated as Jyuyo Bijyutsuhin (重要美術品).
